Become an OSM / VISTA Volunteer
"The opportunity to be involved in national service defined my career path and allowed me to make a positive contribution for the communities I was serving and myself. The year of service propelled me into other jobs and eventually to pursue a doctoral degree."
-Meredith Ballard, OSM/VISTA alum, Doctoral Student, Michigan Technological University
Address environmental issues. Fight poverty. Experience Appalachia. Become an OSM/VISTA.
Note: Please be aware that ACCT is unable to place new OSM/VISTAs until the fall of 2013. If you are interested in beginning your service year in that timeframe, please apply through the AmeriCorps website and indicate this on your application.
Appalachian Coal Country Team OSM/VISTA Volunteers enjoy a unique opportunity to work with rural grassroots environmental leaders, partner with government officials, collaborate with environmental businesses, experience rural Appalachia and explore a wide range of future career paths and opportunities in the process. OSM/VISTA Volunteers live and work in low-income communities dealing with contaminated streams, depressed economies and other issues prevalent in the eastern coal region.
The Appalachian Coal Country Team (ACCT) is a partnership among the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), AmeriCorps VISTA, and community-led nonprofit groups, making it possible for the ACCT to bring greater connection and collaboration between federal agencies and small rural communities.
